But the reason for Christmas is not an idea of peace, a feeling of joy, or even necessarily the hope of eternal life, although those are important. We’re celebrating a Person: Christ Himself.

And Luke 2:11 announces His arrival.

• Unto you. Not to some distant people in history. To you. The angels announced this to the shepherds, yes, but the good news was for each of us. Christ came for you and me, personally and specifically.
• Is born this day. Right now, in real time. This isn’t mythology or a legend or a fairy tale. This is history. God truly entered our world as a baby on a specific day and in a specific place in time, and Christmas is the celebration of that moment.
• A Saviour. Not a teacher, not a prophet, not a “good example”. A Saviour. Because we need saving, each of us. This one word tells us both our problem (we’re lost) and God’s solution (He came to save us and bring us to Himself).
• Which is Christ. The Messiah. The Anointed One. The fulfillment of every Old Testament promise, every last one of hundreds of them. Everything Israel had been waiting for arrived in a manger that night.
• The Lord. Not just a baby. Not just a man. The Lord. God Himself, wrapped in swaddling clothes. The Creator of the universe became one of us. Wow, friend.

When I read this verse slowly, letting each word sink in, I’m overwhelmed. This is why we celebrate Christmas. Not the trappings, not the traditions (as lovely as they are), but this: Christ came, and He came for me.
