Bible Journaling When You’re Not a Journaler
Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. | 2 Timothy 2:1
Bible journaling can sometimes feel like a daunting task, especially if you’re not naturally artistic or if you’ve tried it before and felt overwhelmed. But the heart of Bible journaling isn’t about creating picture-perfect pages; it’s about engaging deeply with God’s Word. 2 Timothy 2:15 reminds us that studying scripture is an essential part of our walk with Christ. Whether that looks like colorful pages of notes and highlights or simple, straightforward annotations in the margins, the goal is to understand, apply, and grow in God’s truth.

Confession time: I’m not a Bible journaler. Yes, I run a business that offers Bible journaling kits, but personally? It’s just not my style. (Feel free to throw your imaginary tomatoes—I’m ready!)
Here’s the thing: while I love the idea of Bible journaling, my brain works differently. I need my notes right there in my Bible, alongside the passage they refer to. If they’re tucked away in a beautiful notebook, odds are I’ll never revisit them.
Why I’m Not a “Traditional” Journaler
Whenever I’ve tried traditional note-taking during church, I found myself at a crossroads: I could either write copious, detailed notes or truly absorb the message. Trying to do both left me with pages of content but no real spiritual connection.
So, I shifted my approach. Instead of separate notebooks, I write directly in my Bible. I highlight verses, jot down dates, and even record a quick thought or phrase that stood out. It’s simple but effective. And the result? A Bible filled with personal breadcrumbs—reminders of where I’ve been spiritually and how God has been at work in my life.
Why This Works for Me
- Everything in One Place: My notes are always with the scripture they reference, so they’re easy to find and reflect on.
- Flexibility: Whether in church or during quiet time, I can highlight, underline, and annotate as I feel led.
- A Visual Journey: Each note and highlight tells a story of growth, challenges, and answered prayers.
One day, I might even perfect a color-coding system (future me will thank me for that!), but for now, my Bible is a messy, colorful, personal testament to my walk with Christ.
Bible Journaling Can Work for You Too
The beauty of Bible journaling is its adaptability. It doesn’t have to mean creating elaborate artwork in your Bible. If that’s not your style, that’s okay! Find what works for you, whether it’s simple highlights, notes in the margins, or even sticky tabs with quick thoughts.

The most important part isn’t how it looks—it’s how it draws you closer to God. Grab a few pens and highlighters, dig into scripture, and leave a trail of spiritual breadcrumbs for your future self to find. You never know how the Holy Spirit will use those moments to encourage you down the road.
